Kick the Discomfort Goodbye With Physiotherapy Foot Pain Stretches and Exercises
Foot pain can happen to anyone, including those who wear high heels, work boots, cowboy boots, or even sneakers with extra cushion in the heel. Physiotherapy offers foot pain stretches and exercises that alleviate pain and enhance recovery for a variety of common conditions in the feet.
Common Causes of Foot Pain:
Plantar Fasciitis:
- This condition causes pain in the thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot, often felt as a stabbing pain in the heel.
Arthritis:
- Joint inflammation can occur in the feet, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling.
Overuse Injuries:
- Activities involving repetitive strain on the feet – like walking, standing for long periods, or wearing poorly fitting shoes– can lead to injuries.
If your foot pain is severe or doesn’t improve with time, it may be time to make an appointment with one of our skilled physiotherapists.
Our physiotherapists will design a personalized program for your foot pain, but here are some examples of stretches and exercises you might expect in a physiotherapy appointment for foot pain:
Stretches:
Calf Stretch:
- Lean forward against a wall, one leg extended back with heel down, feeling the stretch in the calf. Switch legs.
Achilles Tendon Stretch:
- Stand on a step, heels hanging off. Lower heels until stretch is felt, hold, then raise heels.
Ankle Extension:
- While sitting, cross the injured foot over the knee. Gently pull your toes towards you with the opposite hand until stretch feels.
Ankle Flex:
- Cross the injured foot over the opposite knee while sitting. Gently pull your toes towards you with the same-side hand until stretch is felt.
Strengthening:
Toe Towel Scrunches:
- Stand barefoot, one foot on a towel. Scrunch the towel with the toes, keeping the rest of the foot on the ground.
Relief From Foot Pain
A man who worked in a grocery store sought help from a physiotherapist in our clinic for worsening foot pain. He spent his shifts on his feet, stocking shelves and assisting customers for hours. The pain went from dull to a sharp, burning sensation in the balls of his feet. His initial assessment revealed metatarsalgia, a condition where pain and inflammation occur in the ball of the foot, often caused by repetitive stress.
We created a personalized treatment plan that focused on:
Targeted Exercise and Mobility Program
Stretches
- His therapist showed him targeted ways to improve his calf muscles, plantar fascia (the band on the bottom of the foot), and toes to help reduce the pressure on the affected area.
Build Strength
- Exercises that strengthen the muscles in your feet and support your arches help distribute weight more evenly across your feet and reduce the strain on the ball of your foot.
Activity Modifications:
Michael learned strategies to take short breaks throughout his work shifts to rest his feet and reduce prolonged standing.
With dedication to his treatment plan and the support of his physiotherapist, the pain gradually decreased.
